The Sorin Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler System warms and cools circulating blood and organs during open-heart surgery. Maintaining optimal temperature is critical during surgery and improves the patient’s outcome. To achieve this, tanks within the system distribute temperature-controlled water to heat exchangers or blankets to warm or cool the patient. Health officials recently discovered that patients utilizing the Sorin Stockert 3T System during surgery may have contracted a potentially life-threatening nontuberculous mycobacteria infection. LivaNova PLC, the manufacturer of the Sorin Stockert 3T System, failed to provide a system that could maintain a sterile environment during surgery.
Unfortunately, mycobacteria can proliferate within the water tanks of the Sorin Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler System. Although it is considered a closed circuit there are ways for mycobacteria to escape. The water within the system never makes direct contact with the patient but can spread out via openings and vents. The circulating droplets of contaminated water eventually settle into the patient’s open chest cavity where an infection can begin.
From as early as 2012, patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgeries involving the heart, esophagus, lungs, and other organs in the chest are at risk. Nearly 60% of hospitals have used the Sorin 3T Stockert System to perform cardiothoracic surgery leaving more than half a million patients exposed to mycobacteria.
