New Jersey Governor Murphy Signs Child Sex Abuse Bill into Law

On Monday, May 13, 2019, New Jersey Governor Murphy signed A–3648 into law. The bill was approved by the New Jersey General Assembly on March 26, 2019 after almost 20 years of previous efforts to do so. Governor Murphy’s signature is the final step in modifying the New Jersey statutes of limitations applicable to child sexual abuse.

A–3648 makes significant changes to New Jersey’s statutes of limitations including for older survivors of childhood sexual abuse whose claims are currently time–barred. Under the bill, those older abuse survivors would be provided with a 2–year “window of time” within which to file their claims against the perpetrators and responsible institutions. With Governor Murphy signature, the “window of time” will “open” on December 1, 2019.
