Lyft released its first Community Safety Report in 2020. The report outlined data for select adverse events that occurred during Lyft rides. Among other categories, annual statistics on rape (non-consensual sexual penetration) and attempted rape (attempted non-consensual sexual penetration) were included.
Between the years 2017 to 2019, 360 reports of rape were made through the Lyft app. In the same time period, 320 reports of attempted rape were made. It is a widely known fact that sexual assault cases are underreported, so it is likely the numbers are higher.
Unfortunately, these incidents are likely to continue in the future. Lyft-related physical assault, kidnappings, shootings and carjackings have also occurred.
The process of healing after sexual assault or rape is never easy, no matter how resilient a survivor is. Many victims are hesitant to involve law enforcement or attorneys for many reasons. However, after taking the time they need, many individuals do approach these allies to take empowering actions against those responsible. The actions of these courageous individuals that do come forward can help make changes that will reduce the likelihood of these events happening again. In fact, Lyft and Uber have already taken steps to add and improve safety features for users, in part due to the growing number of lawsuits they have faced.
