Uber first made public the number of rape cases reported on its platform in 2019 through the company’s first safety report. The company followed up with another safety report in 2022.
Between 2017 to 2020, the company received 852 reports of non-consensual sexual penetration, or rape. Over the same time period, they also received 871 reported attempts of non-consensual sexual penetration. Because Uber sexual assault cases are underreported, the number that occurred is likely higher.
There is no doubt that there will unfortunately be more of these reports made by riders and drivers in the future. There have also been victims of Uber-related physical assaults, carjackings, kidnappings and shootings.
There is no easy part in the process a survivor goes through after experiencing a sexual assault of any kind, including rape. Many individuals are hesitant to involve law enforcement or legal representatives for many reasons. However, those that do often feel a sense of empowerment. They also can feel like they are taking action to help prevent these events from happening again to someone else. In fact, rideshare companies have already taken steps to improve safety features for riders and drivers, in part due to the number of lawsuits they have faced.
